Here's some notes on an urban fantasy novel I was working on. Please offer ideas for a plot, I have most of the characters and setting worked out.
“I find nothing wrong with this. He has demon blood. It’s as straightforward as it could be, so why the fitful tears?” (Assassin)
“I would never waste tears over any of your actions. And you, boy, don’t presume I’m on your side just because of this. Assassin, this is just to spite you. I hope your failure never rests well within your heart.” (Cleric)
“The years we’ve spent around shady people, and that’s the most dreadful wish you could beshrew me with?” (Assassin)
“We’re all jaded creatures. Tire me no more with this bickering, both of you.” (Alchemist)
“Why are you bothering to waste words with them? It’s custom by now, for them to spite each other and cause a chain of problems from that. Just watch.” (Blade)
“Most words you’ve said in a while, they must feel so honored.” (Alchemist)
“I’m not a mute; I simply don’t find most of your conversations worthwhile.” (Blade)
“My apologies.” (Cleric)
Guardian Assassin—male, sees his job as clearly definitive: either you’re to be killed, or disregarded. He takes his job rather cheerfully though, nothing to be treated with a somber face so long as he gets it done.
“I would not consider myself a bad person, no, unless you would consider me one for following my duties to a dot. (See, Lady Alchemist, I do have vocabulary befitting this age.)”
He’s actually an amiable person to those who he considers allies, the problem being that he considers few as allies, and is adamant in keeping it that way. He’s the type to not mind keeping to his own, people to talk to simply being a bonus.
Relations with the other Guardians:
Alchemist—finds her amusing; addresses her by ‘Lady’ because her class does not bring to mind a woman. He also finds it an odd job to have as a guardian. (Healer I can understand, no matter how much I would want to never admit…but you? Alchemist? Pardon?)
Cleric—is driven by a different moral compass than her, and so never sees eye to eye with her, the difference being that he sees the two of them as having a friendly rivalry, whereas she sees him as a mortal nemesis.
Blade—has a silent agreement with him that is by no means friendship. They will cooperate together when need be, but otherwise, they will ignore one another.
Guardian Cleric—female, sees her job as one to benefit society. She interprets their job much more loosely, instead seeing it as a pick and choose depending on circumstance if their target is not of full demon blood.
“We’re not out to antagonize the world, that would be pointless, so why do you seem so insistent on doing just that?”
She very much condones utilitarianism. Greatest amount of good for the greatest number of people, and so when faced with a difficult decision, goes by that. She doesn’t consider herself a moral person by any means though—she acknowledges that she kills, and will manipulate others if it gets her ultimate goals accomplished.
Relations with other Guardians:
Alchemist—finds her weak-willed and a bit too eccentric when she’s not; yet she prefers to work with her when possible though, since she believes the other to agree with whatever plans she has.
Assassin—cannot stand him for aforementioned reasons.
Blade—respects him for his integrity, though is a bit frightened of him as well.
Guardian Alchemist—female, generally tries to keep peace between the others. She also usually doesn’t have too strong of an opinion on much, and so goes along with whatever; however, when she does find herself with a compelling opinion, or compelling reason contrary to what the others say, she will stand by it.
“Oh? You’re asking for my opinion now? It doesn’t matter, do as you see fit.”
She’s also rather tired of life in general, and so her words can reflect that. (Not so much cynical as just…jaded.) When given the choice, she likes to be in a more ‘silent reflection’ sort of mood.
Relations with other Guardians:
Cleric—finds her rather annoying, but keeps that to herself; annoying in the sense that she can understand her logic and everything, but doesn’t always agree with her.
Assassin—finds him amusing; also sometimes finds his actions a bit frivolous.
Blade—finds him to be interesting conversation when he does talk to her.
Guardian Blade—male, is much like Assassin in the sense that he doesn’t need to be around people, yet finds people to not be an unpleasant thing. He finds solace in silence though enjoys the occasional conversation.
“I’ll decline to comment.”
He can have a rather volatile temper though.
Traits of A Guardian
The class of a guardian usually denotes what abilities the guardian possesses. For example, the Blade guardian focuses on using swords and enhances his abilities to complement his sword play.
In addition, each guardian carries sacred artifacts or relics that provide them with additional abilities that augment their powers, such as the Ring of The Swordsman or the Ring of the Magus.
To be selected as a guardian, there are multiple requirements. The alignment of the guardian does not matter. The Guardian can be as evil or good as they want as long as they adhere to the rules set by the Magus Chapter. By breaking these rules, the other members of the group have permission to hunt the rogue guardian down. A reason an evil guardian might occur is that when one kills demon, they gain the ability to supplement themselves with the demons mana or skill so it is to their benefit to hunt down demons. One requirement is that one must be able to use the basic rudiments of magic. Another requirement is skill at some weapon. Thirdly, they are usually quite young when they are selected and most remain at that age until they are killed by demonic forces or their allies when they go rogue, since by possessing magic, they are able to extend their lifetimes by centuries. They do not age and usually remain around the age where they were first selected, usually around fifteen to sixteen. The reason they do not age is a side effect of the magic they wield and to keep their bodies in peak physical condition.
Being a guardian occurs in a selection process dictated by the Magus Chapter. When they have approved an individual to become a guardian, the position is then granted for life. They can choose to retire early though that rarely happens.
The guardians were created a check to balance the powers of the Magus Chapter. Knowing that power is dangerous in the hands of one group, the rival group of the Magi, The Church, created and appointed Guardians to balance the Magi. The term magus has become synonymous with demonic taint in their veins since most magi draw their powers from the demonic blood that flows through their veins. Demonic doesn’t necessarily mean evil but merely otherworldly. So technically, the term spirits would suffice, but the church tends to classify all spirits into the categories of demons.
